What is Nephrotic syndrome?

Nephrotic syndrome is a group of multiple symptoms that are caused by damage that has occurred to the glomeruli of the kidneys which are the small blood vessels responsible for the filtering of waste products and excess fluids from our blood.

The glomeruli also help us to retain a sufficient level of protein in our blood which is important in order to regulate the number of fluids that are contained in the blood as the protein works in such as manner that it acts like a sponge soaking up our excess fluids.

When the glomeruli become damaged, this process is inhibited and causes a loss of protein within the body, hence, causing the accumulations of fluid within our system. It is possible that this condition may come up again after being treated, such a situation is known as nephrotic syndrome relapse.

Causes of Nephrotic syndrome

  • There are many diseases that can damage the glomeruli such as diabetes and high blood pressure.
  • This disease is more common in children than and in adults.
  • The other common causes of this condition are kidney stones, family history of the disease, urinary tract infection, heart disease, physical injury to kidneys and a genetic disorder.

Signs and symptoms

  • Nephrotic syndrome takes time to develop to later stages.
  • The visible signs of the advancement of this disease are common among most patients such as feeling sick, nausea, vomiting, dryness, and itchiness in the skin, muscle cramps and twitches, mild to high fever, loss of appetite, dark-colored and bad-smelling urine, frequent urge to urinate, abnormal weight loss or weight gain.

Common treatment

The most common treatment that patients take during later stages is dialysis and kidney transplant. In dialysis, an artificial machine is used to filter the blood when the kidneys are not able to perform the function. Until the kidney is transplanted, dialysis is done to keep the kidneys going.

However such treatment doesn’t cure kidneys and is short-lived.

Kidney-friendly diet

People with kidney cancer or chronic kidney disease have other health issues that need to be taken into consideration with a diet, so meeting with nutrition and diet professionals can be helpful.
