What is hypokalemia?

Hypokalemia is a term that acure when the potassium level in the blood is too low. Potassium is an important electrolyte for nerve and muscle cell functioning especially in muscle cells in the heart. The kidneys control the potassium level in the blood and allowing for excess potassium to flush out in the form of urine or sweat.

There are many reasons that can cause hypokalemia among middle and old age people. This condition happens because a high amount of potassium leaves the digestive tract.

It’s usually a symptom of another problem such as vomiting, nausea, kidneys or adrenal glands, drinking an excessive amount of alcohol regularly, prolonged intake of antibiotics and painkillers, diabetes and hypertension. Proper treatment is required for this condition as it can cause a serious condition of kidney disease.

Possible symptoms

Mild hypokalemia doesn’t cause symptoms. Low potassium levels can lead to abnormal heart rhythms, severe muscle weakness, and other major symptoms. The common signs of kidney disease that one can experience are:

  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Muscle cramps and twitches
  • Respiratory failure
  • Premature heartbeats
  • Fibrillation
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Loss of appetite
  • Joint and back pain
  • Change in urination pattern and texture

Diagnosis and common treatment for hypokalemia

If the above symptoms for this condition prevail a quick blood-urine test is required. This helps in identifying if you are losing any potassium in the process which is a clear sign of kidney dysfunction.

The most common treatment for identifying the condition is to take a medicinal course, dialysis and kidney transplant. Dialysis is an alternative to kidney function when the kidneys are not able to perform daily functions. This process doesn’t cure kidney problems so ultimately the patient has to go kidney transplants.
