An outline of kidney shrinkage condition

Kidney failure is also known as kidney shrinkage is a very serious condition. If the treatment is not taken to treat such a problem it may prove to be fatal for the health. Kidneys are the filter units of the body and their main function is to flush out the metabolic waste from the body. They also perform other functions like balancing the metabolic waste in the body and initiate the production of red blood cells. Kidney failure occurs when kidneys partially stop working due to certain reasons. The damage will lead to building up of toxic waste which can completely damage the kidneys and even other organs of the body.

Possible causes of kidney shrinkage

There are many reasons that can lead to kidney shrinkage in the patients; some of the most common are high blood pressure, diabetes and kidney stones. The other causes that can lead to kidney problems are a genetic disorder, heavy blood loss, physical injury, tumor or cancer, and bladder or infection such as sepsis.

Visible symptoms of kidney shrinkage

The signs of kidney disease are not visible in the initial stages. The symptoms that one can observe in the advanced stages are:

  • Change in the frequency of urine
  • Difficulty, pain or burning sensation while urinating
  • Foamy or bubbles in urine
  • Dark colored urine
  • Blood in urine in severe cases
  • Fatigue or lethargy
  • Dry and itchy skin
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Feeling Dizziness and sickness
  • Swelling in hands, feet, and ankles
  • Loss of appetite
  • Abnormal weight gain or weight loss

The above symptoms need a quick diagnosis before any further damage to the kidneys. After the diagnosis is done and the disease is confirmed an immediate treatment will be needed.

Short term kidney shrinkage treatment

There are several treatments for kidney shrinkage and it mainly depends upon the condition of the kidneys.

  • Dialysis filters and purifies the blood using an artificial machine. The machine is an alternative to the kidney functions. It doesn’t cure kidney failure but rather extend life until the kidneys are cured or transplanted
  • Kidney transplant is done once a compatible donor is found. A new kidney may work perfectly but at times the body may reject it and the transplant is done again
  • Prolonged intake of drugs and prescribed medicines can have side-effects on other parts of the body
