Kidneys are bean-shaped, fist-sized organs that function is the formation of urine and filtering blood and expelling out waste and toxins from the body.  Kidneys play a major role in the excretory system. It also performs certain other functions like secretion of various hormones like erythropoietin, renin, and active form of vitamin D. They also maintain the water balance a which is also called the electrolyte balance in the body. This includes the levels of sodium, potassium, and chlorine in the body.  How kidney disease affects the body? Kidney damage is detected when the kidneys are unable to perform these functions. This damage could be caused by inflammation in the functional units of the kidneys i.e. nephrons, pores in the tubules, lack of blood supply in the kidneys, an excess of protein in the diet. When kidney disease aggravates this could lead to complete kidney damage result in the last line of treatment which is kidney transplant or dialysis.

Kidney disease is actually a multi-organ illness. Damage to the kidneys be it acute, chronic, glomerulonephritis, nephrotic syndrome or polycystic kidney disease can cause damage to the other body parts functioning. How kidney disease affects the body?

The blood system: Erythropoietin hormone, secreted by kidneys is used to help in the production of RBCs. In case of damaged kidneys, this hormone is decreased in less quantity leading to a condition of anemia. This may cause heart failure and organ failure in extreme cases. The cardiovascular system: Kidney disease increases the risk of heart-related diseases and can become a greater cause of heart attack and strokes. How kidney disease affects the body?  Kidney damage may lead to increased fluid buildup around the heart, lungs, and soft tissues leading to increased blood volume, the rise in levels of urea (a by-product of protein metabolism ) and over secretion of renin resulting to cause hypertension and blockage in the arteries. The connected joints: kidney failure leads to the deposit of protein amyloid that often cause pain, stiffness and buildup of fluids in the joints .this condition is also called Amyloidosis

The nervous system: kidney disease also cause an imbalance of hormones in the body leading to symptoms like irritability, mood swings, anger, mental confusion, lack of concentration etc.

The immune system: The immunity of the body decreases with the growing damage to the kidneys. An excess toxin level makes the body prone to external infections causing an easy wound to the skin, problem in sleeping, fluctuation in blood pressure etc.
